Savannah and Charleston

Savannah in Georgia is I think the most beautiful city I’ve ever visited.

Every street you walk down is stunning, block after block – but much of this historic beauty was almost lost as by the mid 1950’s a number of the heritage houses had been torn down to make way for new buildings.

The destruction of these properties promoted seven local woman to form a historical preservation society for the town – that since that time has successfully saved over 350 properties in this little city from development.

The results of their work can been seen instantly on a walk around Savannah.

Whilst in Savannah we also visited the Bonaventure Cemetery best known for its role in the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” as cemeteries go – this really is a stunningly beautiful one…

From Savannah we took a short train ride to Charleston a port city in South Carolina.

Charleston also proved to be a very pretty city with cobblestones streets and horse drawn carriages a fixture throughout it.

Charleston sits on a beautiful harbour – about 11km off the Atlantic Ocean, and houses a beautiful university/college campus we took time to wander through.

Of the two cities Savannah was the one I’d visit again – as whilst tiny in size – it was just magical to visit.

Next up Washington DC and Portland Maine!
